Egg Tempera and 24 Ct Gold Leaf on Tulip Wood Board with Kivotos Frame, 38 cm x 19 cm
This icon has a Damar Varnish finish which appears satin. The icon board has a border to the front face, called a Kovtchec in Russian or Kivitos in Greek. On the reverse side the board has a dovetail jointed rear truss to prevent warping.
NOTE: The wood panels are primed with two coats of rabbit skin glue and then the linen is glued in place. The linen is coated twice with glue and whiting primer and allowed to dry, then a further fifteen coats of gesso applied. This takes place over six or so days.
