Saint Euddogwy

£400.00

Egg Tempera and 24ct Gold Leaf on Tulip Wood Board with Kivotos frame, 30cm x 25cm.

I took inspiration for the boarder from a church fresco on the island of Tinos, Greece, the font is adapted from a script in the book of Kells.

The icon board has a routed border to the front face, called a Kovtchec in Russian or Kivitos in Greek. This is to emphasise the meeting of the interior divine world with earthly world. In the past, the Kivitos frame would also protect the inner image from wear and tear whilst traveling with the icon.

St Euddogwy (Oudoceus) was a sixth-century bishop of Llandaff in South-East Wales, remembered as one of the early Christian saints who helped establish and nurture the faith in Wales. Associated with the spiritual legacy of St Teilo, he belongs to the ancient tradition of Welsh Christianity in which prayer, pastoral care and holiness were deeply connected to the local landscape and community. His feast day is celebrated on 2 July, and his memory bears witness to the rich Christian heritage of the British Isles.
