Egg Tempera and 24ct Gold Leaf on Tulip Wood Panel with Kivotos Frame, 34cm x 27cm.
The icon board has a routed border to the front face, called a Kovtchec in Russian or Kivitos in Greek. This is to emphasise the meeting of the interior divine world with earthly world. In the past, the Kivitos frame would also protect the inner image from wear and tear whilst traveling with the icon.
St Benedict of Nursia (c. 480–547) was a Christian monk and spiritual father whose Rule of St Benedict profoundly shaped Western monasticism. Seeking a life of prayer, solitude and devotion to God, he established a monastic community at Monte Cassino in Italy, where he developed a balanced way of life centred on prayer, work, humility and obedience. Although chiefly associated with the Western Church, St Benedict is also honoured in Orthodox Christianity as a witness to the undivided Christian tradition. His enduring legacy lies in his vision of monastic life as a path of spiritual transformation, where the ordinary rhythms of daily life become an offering to God.
