Saint Cuthbert

"Let us glorify the Lord with our actions, rather than merely with our words." - Saint Cuthbert

St Cuthbert Icon
(After Aidan Hart)

St Cuthbert was my first foray into the world of iconography. I completed this icon under the tutorage of Aidan Hart, a renowned iconographer working in the UK. Coming from a contemporary art background, I thought I would get it ‘straight off the bat’; however I was unprepared for the amount of learning and paitecne required. The sense of achievement that followed making this icon motivated me to press onwards!

The life of Saint Cuthbert.

Saint Cuthbert, born in the early seventh century in Northumbria, emerged as one of the most revered figures in the history of the British Isles. His early years were marked by a profound sense of spirituality; after witnessing a vision of angels, he chose to dedicate his life to God.

Cuthbert became a monk at Melrose Abbey, where he was renowned for his piety and commitment to monastic life. His devotion inspired many, and soon he became known for both his ascetic practices and his skill in teaching the faith to others, drawing numerous followers to the monastic community.

Cuthbert's life was filled with miraculous events that underscored his close relationship with the divine. He is known for his ability to heal the sick and even raise the dead. One notable miracle occurred when he restored a young boy to life, demonstrating his deep compassion and the divine power that flowed through him.

As word of his miracles spread, so did his reputation as a holy man. After serving as the abbot of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert's unwavering faith led him to the position of bishop, where he continued to blend his administrative duties with a life of prayer and asceticism.

Varnishing

Here I am laying down varnish after allowing the Icon to cure for a couple of months.

After his death in 687 AD, Cuthbert’s legacy continued to inspire countless faithful. His body, which was found to be incorrupt, became a site of pilgrimage, attracting many seeking healing and intercession.

The stories of his miracles lived on in the hearts of the people, further formalised through the writings of Bede, who detailed Cuthbert’s life in his hagiographies. Today, Saint Cuthbert is celebrated as the patron saint of northern England, remembered not only for his miracles but also for his profound dedication to a life of service and spirituality.
